The title takes its cue from the formation to which it is dedicated, the Tube Quartet, and their deep, low register. The composition is dedicated to the English composer Michael Tippett, from whom the piece takes its cue; in fact, in the first movement one can hear a quotation from his Horn Quartet. The composition is divided into four movements to highlight the sound mixtures of the quartet but also the virtuoso aspect of these instruments, which appear clumsy but instead reveal great agility. A brilliant composition inspired by the Anglo-American repertoire with lyrical passages alternating with very rhythmic passages typical of brass music.
