Le opere contenute in questa raccolta sono state concepite da Bach per clavicembalo e sono modellate, pur con le deroghe che sono tipiche dell’arte bachiana, sulle strutture della suite e della ouverture francesi. Di qui la scelta di connotare la raccolta con la dicitura “lo stile francese”, sebbene nella produzione bachiana i linguaggi musicali dell’epoca convivano sia all’interno di un singolo brano che nell’avvicendamento dei movimenti che costituiscono un ciclo compositivo. Nel caso di questa antologia risulta comunque evidente una prevalenza dell’influenza francese, resa esplicita, oltre che dall’adozione delle forme della suite e dell’ouverture, anche dalla scrittura che rimanda a caratteri espressivi di derivazione tipicamente francese. La genesi di queste opere è da collocare nell’arco di tempo che va dagli anni di Lüneburg a quelli di Weimar (1700-1717). Si tratta dunque di lavori che appartengono alla produzione giovanile di Bach, in cui l’influenza francese si giustifica in relazione ai contatti che egli ebbe, nel corso della sua permanenza a Lüneburg, con la corte della vicina Celle, dove imperavano il gusto e la moda della corte di Francia.

The works contained in this collection were conceived for the harpsichord and are modelled, albeit with typical Bachian deviations, on the structures of the French suite and ouverture. Thus the choice of the words “lo stile francese”, even though Bach’s works tend to contain a mixture of musical influences both within a single piece and in the ordering of the movements that make up a particular cycle of compositions. In the case of this anthology the major influence is nevertheless clearly French, made explicit not only by the adoption of the forms of the suite and ouverture, but also by the style of writing which is typically French in expression. The works were written some time between the years spent in Lüneburg and those in Weimar (1700-1717). They can therefore be considered youthful works, where the French influence can be explained above all by the contacts the composer made during his stay in Lüneburg with the nearby court of Celle, where the dominant taste and fashion was that of the French court.
